If you’ve had your ear to the ground on the ambient/electronica scene you may we have heard of Hungarian-born artist Deplicant – if not, we recently stopped in with him to find out about his creative process – so listen up!
How do you want to come across as an artist?
Honestly I just want to make music and make people travel through my universe by sharing with them. Make them feel out of this world for the time of a listening, make them feel good.
What’s the story behind your most recent release?
I started out DJ-ing in small clubs and bars in Switzerland, and eventually thought I’ll start producing my own music. So I started trying to write some Electro/Progressive House – I learned quite a lot but I ended up realising that it wasn’t as good as I wanted it because I was permanently trying to sound as good “as the others”, and because of that I killed my own style and my music lacked personality. So one day I said f–k it and I removed every limit I self imposed to my music, and that’s how 14/40 came to life. It’s called 14/40 because one day is composed of 1440 minutes and it took me one day to write the song.
What comes first to you when making a track?
Usually my first aim is to create an ambiance, an atmosphere – and then work around that to write a more powerful, more moving drop. My ultimate goal though, is that when you’ve finished listening to the song, you feel like you went through a little journey across my universe, so I tend to use a lot of different sounds and even rhythms and I spend most of my time designing new, often non-conventional sounds.
What do you take inspiration from beyond music?
I draw a lot of inspiration from everything and anything science-fiction/cyberpunk related. I am a huge fan of films such as Blade Runner (both movies actually) for example, both for its ambiance and the themes explored. I always try to kinda be in that futuristic, little dark universe I love so much. I also love things related to technologies and how it influences our everyday lives – robots and transhumanism, which is partly why I try to keep a very organic touch while I’m composing pure electronic sounds. I like the ambiguity of an organic yet electronic thing…
