Up-and-coming United Kingdom-based artist, Fynbos, recently released his latest single, “The Only One,” on October 22nd. Taking inspiration from several Brit pop indie artists from the 1990s and early 2000s, Fynbos has been able to craft a unique sound that is reminiscent of those before him but also very distinct.
“The Only One” starts with a guitar that simultaneously feels hopeful but also strangely melancholic. When the vocals enter, the true tone of this melancholic song gets revealed to the listener and even as the song grows in intensity, the message of the song remains strongly melancholic. In terms of the meaning of the song and its lyrics, I think Fynbos sums it up perfectly.
“During the lockdown I had more time on my hands and it was at this point that my daughter told me how she was being bullied in school. That conversation sparked something. We felt separated from the world and ‘The Only One’ is based on that feeling of yearning and isolation.” – Fynbos
