Any fans of indie music out there, particularly of the rock variety, will want to check out “Smithereens,” the new single from Rabih Salloum, who records as Grave Jones. Salloum has a long history in the music business, most notably as one half of Slutterhouse, the Lebanese electro-pop duo who shook up the landscape a decade ago. Slutterhouse really stirred things up in their day, and toured with some big names.
Following the break up of that band, Salloum took a break himself. In his own words: “I took a break from music in 2012 after my former band Slutterhouse broke up. The decision was driven by the huge disappointment and disillusionment I went through then, and the inability to find the right motivation, musical allies and right sound to bounce back.”
Bounce back he has. “Smithereens” is a great track, and a welcome antidote to the over-produced pop which dominates the modern charts. Talking about his comeback, Salloum had this to say: “I don’t think people really make choices in life. My comeback to music was not a deliberate, conscious choice. It was vital necessity without which I would’ve gone completely insane.” Music fans looking for something with a little more kick will be delighted that Salloum is back.
