The Guapos: A Super Group of Musical Brilliance Four of the most talented musicians from Mexico, Spain and beyond have come together to form an exciting new supergroup called The Guapos. Adán Jodorowsky, El David Aguilar, Jay deLa Cueva and Leiva have joined forces to create a unique sound that blends classic and modern sounds with catchy lyrics and danceable beats.
How would you describe your songwriting process?
“In this particular project it was a joint process, the four of us complement each other. It’s a ping-pong of ideas amid laughter.” – Adan
“My composition process in synthesis consists of identifying noble themes for the song genre and that represent something real in my life, and from there to find the musicality that most facilitates the transmission of that message, always trying to make it cool, novelty and work. behind” – David
“For me it consists of capturing small everyday moments that go unnoticed. There are songs. I don’t try to talk about big problems but about small moments that generate some big emotions.” – Leiva
“The composition processes for The Guapos were super fertile and very fun on this album, there was not a single day that we got together and a song was not born” – Jay
How has this process evolved over time?
“10 years ago while I was with Jay we had the idea of having a band with that name, I think we let it wait to let life put Leiva and El David Aguilar on our way to complete the band. The Guapos (The Handsome) came into existence at the right time. For now we have to get together somewhere in the world to start working on our a second material.” Adan
“Over time the songwriting process has become more fluid. The techniques are sharpening. Sometimes the song comes through music and sometimes through literary ideas or expressions.” – David
“You start to understand that the fewer chords and the less harmonic pyrotechnics, the better for the song. Over the years you get rid of elements and go to how truly relevant the song itself is. My commitment is always with the song. Style and melodic acrobatics were never my priority” – Leiva
“For me the evolution of composition has been very notorious, and I don’t stop learning by getting together with magnificent composers, today I see how songs come from another place, they are gifts and you have to be attentive, quoting Tom waits in a situation that
comes to him an idea and he doesn’t have a pen or recorder, he knows he’s going to forget it and tells him go find Leonard Cohen, he’s sure he’s not doing anything right now and he’s going to make you exist.” – Jay
Do you take songwriting inspiration from anyone in particular?
“At one time yes I did have, of all the artists I liked but over the years you learn to share your own voice.” – Adan
“I am sometimes inspired by people but not always. Sometimes the inspiration is another existing song, or a particular sound or a city or even a thought.” – David
“The same person always flutters around in my songs, yes. At least in recent years. An inexhaustible source!” – Leiva
What is the hardest thing about songwriting to you?
“Do not fall into the obvious, find an original theme in what has already been done by millions of people.” – Adan
“The hardest thing about writing songs is coming up with one that feels solid, somehow belonging to the world. In other words, that the song is good in some way.” – David
“The really difficult thing is to tell something. With a universal language that people understand without being vulgar or cheap. That balance between the popular and the sophisticated but minimalist.” – Leiva
“Strip myself emotionally. Revealing situations, for me mystery is more seductive.” – Jay
Do you have any remedies for a creative writing block?
“Leave it for the next day, get a coffee, go for a walk at the park and try again once I’m back. You never have to fully let go.” – Adan
“One remedy for creative block could be self-imposed limits. To the extent that you limit yourself, the path becomes clearer and then you lead yourself to a safe place.” – David
“The remedy is to go out, go to a concert, travel. It’s impossible to write if things don’t happen to you. The composer has to be alive and moving, if not , you are dead.” – Leiva
