A rescue dog who once struggled with anxiety and behavioural challenges is now helping raise awareness about the importance of understanding dogs who need space.
Monty, a dog adopted by Helen and her family in 2019, spent three years in a rescue centre after being found as a stray. Like many rescue animals, he arrived in his new home carrying the effects of an uncertain past.
Despite the difficulties at the beginning, Monty’s story has since become an example of how patience, training and awareness can transform the life of a rescue dog.
A Challenging Start for a Rescue Dog
When Monty first arrived, Helen quickly realised that daily life with him would require patience.
The dog had previously been rehomed but returned due to behavioural concerns, including resource guarding around food. He also showed signs of anxiety and reacted strongly to unfamiliar people and other dogs.
Walks could be unpredictable, as Monty would often bark or lunge when he felt overwhelmed by his surroundings.
Helen also noticed that he appeared frightened when people picked up certain objects such as brooms or mops, suggesting he may have experienced negative treatment earlier in life.
Raising Awareness for Dogs Who Need Space

Small Changes That Make a Big Difference
Monty now wears a yellow vest with the message “I Need Space,” while Helen sometimes wears a tabard explaining that her dog requires distance.
According to Helen, many people are supportive once they understand what the yellow signal means. Something as simple as briefly putting another dog on a lead or giving extra room on a path can help prevent stressful encounters.
A Reminder About Understanding Rescue Dogs
Today, Monty is over 13 years old and living a calmer life with the family who adopted him.
His story highlights a wider message often shared by dog behaviour specialists: rescue dogs can thrive with patience, training and greater public awareness about their needs.
