It’s fitting that Oupa Mac’s first release should be dedicated to the love of his life, his wife of 50 years. Titled ‘When a Goodbye is Forever’, it’s a touching ballad that pays tribute to their life together in a way that is powerful, compassionate and incredibly moving.
Described as an artist who has come full circle, Oupa’s career as a musician has seen highs and lows over the years. He first found acclaim as a piano prodigy at the age of 6, before playing in bands and performing lead vocals. But for the last nine years, his life had been dominated by caring for his wife – who was suffering from a complex mix of mental and physical ailments.
Despite the strain of this, Oupa channelled his emotion in a creative way, writing and recording his heartfelt single, ‘When a Goodbye is Forever’. Perhaps even more impressive is the collaboration between Oupa Mac and producer Alex Dixon – a local musician and music producer with a professional studio in his garage. ie 16-year-old Alex – who none of the local people had heard of – to working side-by-side with Oupa Mac; producing and performing drums and guitar parts on the single.

Whilst there’s no doubt that Alex’s production talents were an asset, it’s clear that he brought something else invaluable to the recording – respect and admiration for a man who had spent his life creating music. And of course, the single itself is a truly heartbreaking love letter to Oupa’s wife. Its simple and effective pop/rock structure places the focus on the incredibly emotional weight in his voice; making for a song that resonates deeply with anyone who’s experienced loss.
With a story this moving and powerful, it’s no wonder ‘When a Goodbye is Forever’ has become an instant local success. It’s a tribute to the strength of Oupa Mac and his family which has been felt far and wide in the village where he released it. We can only hope it will be just as successful when it reaches a wider audience.
Listen now to Oupa Mac’s ‘When a Goodbye is Forever’ for an emotional and powerful experience you won’t soon forget.
