For Nick Williams, painting is a way of creating atmosphere and inviting the viewer into a story. His contemporary figurative oil paintings are known for their vivid colour, textured surfaces and sense of mystery, often appearing like scenes from remembered journeys or imagined landscapes.

Williams’ work is created through a slow and demanding process. He often spends months, and sometimes years, developing individual paintings. Layers of oil paint are built up, sanded back and reworked, resulting in heavily impasto surfaces that make each piece feel tactile and physically present. This emphasis on texture has become one of the defining qualities of his artistic identity.

The artist’s paintings often suggest warm, sunlit environments and distant places, blending imagination with a feeling of memory. Influenced by artists including Vuillard, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Velázquez, Anselm Kiefer, Paula Rego and Peter Doig, Williams combines figurative traditions with magic realism. His scenes feel familiar but also slightly transformed, as though something unexpected may be unfolding within them.

A self-taught artist, Williams chose not to follow a conventional art school path. His independent development has allowed him to create work outside traditional boundaries, leading to important achievements such as his 2023 solo exhibition at 54 The Gallery in Shepherd Market, Mayfair. Today, his Cornwall-based practice continues to produce vibrant, layered paintings that attract attention for their originality and emotional depth.
