The Chicago-based blues rock group known as The Footlight District are releasing their latest anthemic single, called “Lightning,” on September 9th. This band of literal siblings brings about a certain sound and connection in both their live shows and recordings that most rock groups of today cannot manufacture. For “Lightning,” The Footlight District were blessed with the opportunity to collaborate with Russell Marsden of Band of Skulls, who was able to bring about The Footlight District’s full potential after lending them his years of expertise and mastery in the alternative rock world.
“Lightning” begins with quirky yet slightly mysterious guitar introduction that immediately grabs the listener’s attention because from this point, you have no idea where this song could possibly go. Right after this introduction, the direction of the song becomes obvious when all of the other instruments join in for this heavy, anthemic-like rock beat. A listener can’t help but start head-banging when the more aggressive tone of the song starts and the vocals take the center stage.
When the vocal melody of the verse begins, most of the other instruments that were playing so heavily before either stopping playing for a little or get quieter in order to incorporate a build up into the chorus, which The Footlight District does so excellently and effortlessly. During the chorus, more vocalists join in to help craft that feeling and aesthetic from everyone’s favorite anthems. After the first chorus, a breakdown takes place to highlight the strength and power of the next chorus. While the breakdown highlights the prowess of the group’s vocalist, the last chorus highlights the prowess of the group’s lead guitarist, resulting in this epic display of musicianship and talent.
