Reintroducing Raye. As a fan of all kinds of music, it is rare to see such a reinvention of a young artist that has been authentically led by the artist themselves. Reintroducing and reinventing Raye – who is back with emotional and musically explosive songs that poetically cover feelings of rejection, betrayal and strength.
There is no doubt that this new vision that Raye is exploring is self directed and empowering for all young female artists that are currently working in the music industry system. Since ending her record contract, Raye has stepped out into the industry as an unsigned artist and is ready to explore her experiences openly through her music.
Dance track Black Mascara pairs two examples of Rayes’ strengths, opening with a lyrically vulnerable hook that then quickly picks up tempo to send a ruthless message lyrically full of warning and demonstrates the strength in her artistry.
Described as the only upbeat dance track on the album, Raye goes on to say “This song is about another story that has contributed to my ‘blues’. I used the juxtaposition of an upbeat dance track to tell this awful story of being misled by someone I really loved and trusted. While it was a dark low moment, it was also cathartic for me. The lyric ‘once you see my black mascara run from me to my mother’s hands’ is me saying, ‘if only you could actually see the damage that’s been done.’
